1) MISSIONS Program

MISSION PROGRAM SUMMARY

GTD's Mission Program is made up of short term mission trips focused on reaching out with the love of Christ to those less fortunate. Each trip lasts 3-14 days and is centered around community outreach & service projects. Currently GTD offers domestic mission trips to hurricane affected areas and international mission trips to Costa Rica. Our Costa Rica project is an exciting multiyear endeavor highlighted by our construction projects that will eventually include an orphanage, medical center, fish farm, distribution center, and GTD's MOAB (Mission & Outdoor Adventure Base). And, of course, it wouldn't be a GTD event without thrilling adventures during your free time. Sign up today to be a part of GTD's missions program. Please check our ADOPT-A-NEED list for current supply needs.

MISSION PROGRAM SEASON & LOCATION
GTD's Mission Program runs throughout the entire year and is most popular during the spring & summer months. Since Costa Rica is close to the equator it stays warm year round allowing for work projects even during Christmas vacation. September thru November is considered our Costa Rica Mission Trip off season.

PRIVATE GROUP MISSION TRIPS
- AIR TRAVEL -
WHY DOESN'T GTD PROVIDE AIR TRAVEL SERVICE?
We used to reserve airline tickets for groups, but eventually found that group fares are actually much more expensive than individual fares - sometimes $200-$300 more. And some less expensive airlines don't offer group tickets. In addition, the amount of time, expense, and resources that go into reserving group airfare for several groups per year actually required us to shift our focus from the event itself to air travel.

When reserving air travel for one group of people, it's pretty simple and you can actually save more money than we could if we handled it for you. The information and tips below will assist you in acquiring the best travel arrangements at the best price.
WHERE IS COSTA RICA?
Costa Rica is in Central America
located between the countries of Nicaragua (north) and Panama (south)
and between the Pacific Ocean (west) and the Atlantic Ocean / Caribbean Sea (east)
WHERE ARE THE AIRPORTS IN COSTA RICA?
There are 2 international airport options for your mission trip:
LIR AIRPORT (Liberia, CR)     -OR-     SJO AIRPORT (San Jose, CR)
WHICH AIRPORT SHOULD I FLY INTO?
We will meet you at either airport with transportation for your group, but you can not split your group between both airports. You must select one airport and one pick-up date & time (the pick-up date & time refers to when you want GTD to pick-up your group).

Which airport you choose really depends on a few factors such as the location of your group's mission project, the amount of time you want to spend traveling on the road, the amount of money you are willing to spend on airfare, how comfortable you are traveling in busy airports and the amount of Costa Rican landscape you desire to see. The following comparison is based on your group doing its mission project at the GTD Mission & Outdoor Adventure Base (M.O.A.B.) in Guayabo, CR

PROS: Usually least expensive airfare (can be up to $200 less per round trip ticket than LIR); more airlines to choose from; more restaurants & shops in airport; overall more amenities; completely "indoor" airport (no exposure to foul weather); air conditioned; see more of Costa Rica while traveling to your destination.
CONS: Larger airport (can be more confusing than small airports); more travelers; more traffic; 4-5 hour drive to GTD M.O.A.B.

PROS: 1 hour drive to GTD M.O.A.B.; smaller airport (very simple; easy to find your way around; can't get lost!); less travelers; less traffic.
CONS: Usually more expensive airfare (can be up to $200 more per round trip ticket than SJO); less airlines to choose from; less restaurants & shops in airport; overall less amenities; outdoor walk from plane to terminal (this is only a con during foul weather); no air conditioning; see less of Costa Rica while traveling to your destination.
WHERE DO I GO TO FIND AIRLINE TICKETS?
You have 2 options: (1) Use a Travel Agent or (2) Do-It-Yourself

1) TRAVEL AGENT: You will have to find a Travel Agent or you can try the Travel Agent we've used for several trips. Over the past 3 years we have used Betty's Tours and been extremely pleased. Betty operates out of her home/office in Tampa and has a high level of integrity and great work ethic. She'll work hard to find you the best deals around. Because she is a busy one-woman operation you have to proactively follow-up with her. Don't wait for her to call you back, just keep calling her back until you get the information and reservations you need. She knows what she's doing and because she is a small operation she will invest time in getting great deals in hard to find places that larger travel agencies won't. And since she is from Costa Rica she has built a great network of people & resources with many Central American airlines.

BETTY'S TOURS: 813.908.1400 (fax: 813.960.8062)... no website

2) DO-IT-YOURSELF: The other option is to find the deals you want on your own. You can do this either directly with the airlines or through online travel businesses. Below you will find links to each airline that we've used in the past as well as popular online travel businesses (many of which we've never used and can't comment on their reliability or core values).
